In “Soiled” Dane Rousay and Svetlana Zwetkof manipulate two sound compositions pre-recorded to compact discs by physically altering the state of the built-in CD player speakers that play these pieces. The CD players are methodically buried over the thirty minute duration of the performance. Visually the outcome of the piece is understood: the CD players are completely covered. However, sonically, the outcome is less certain. Each artist’s composition has not been heard by the other before the time of performance. This allows for fleeting sound discovery in the moments of performance, through the novelty of each performer’s piece to the other and through the distortion caused by burying the CD players.
